what3words:
For those with a smart phone, what3words is an App you can download on to your phone.
It is very similar to Google Maps but is far more accurate. It was originally intended for use by the emergency services to help them pinpoint incidents anywhere in the country.
The UK is divided up into 3 metre squares. Each individual square is identified by three words.
If you put the three words into the App it will pinpoint the position to within 3 metres and, like Google Maps, you can get directions and use it to guide you to the destination in the same way you use a SatNav.
It can be voice activated. Tap on the speech bubble icon in the search bar. Say the three words, without the dots or slashes, and choose the correct result.

Geocaching:
We have been looking at using Geocaching locations to create virtual trails which require no travelling for recce or maintenance.
There are now over 2 million Geocaches worldwide so there are quite a few options!
We found one 900 metres from our house. Some of you may have done some Geocaching already.
If not have a look at a website called “What is Geocaching” for an overview.
To access the locations you need to download the free Geocaching app, which works for both Android and iPhone devices, create an account using your email address and make up a username and password.
We did this very easily. Search for Geocaching on Google and choose the official app, usually the first one listed. Download and install the app. You can open it from there or from your list of apps. and follow the instructions.
This gives access to details of easy to find caches suitable for beginners on a map which works very much like Google Maps. The markers are highlighted in green, there is no charge for these.
There are lots more markers which are greyed out, to get their details you have to pay (not much) to upgrade to the premium version of the app, not necessary for us at this stage.
Each Geocache has a unique identifier code starting GC. If you click on the marker on the map there is some brief information about the cache. Be sure to click again on the information panel for more detail it is usually very interesting. Historically there is a hidden container with some small items, you take something and leave something (and sign the book). In urban areas this might have been raided!
To navigate to the cache first click on the navigation button. This displays an “as the crow flies” map from your location to the cache – not very useful as this could lead you to e.g., walk across a motorway, ford a river. However there is a little symbol of a car at the top of the map which opens a Google map with walking directions to the cache. When you reach the cache simply repeat the procedure to the next one and so on…
For practice choose some caches nearby, for example GC5T578, and try navigating to them from your house.

There is a Facebook group for GPSHash where you can leave your valuable feedback.

please consider support in the form of a small donation. > GPSHash <
GPSHash is a free website that lets you set, walk, run, jog, bike, drive or even sail a hidden mystery trail
or course.
If you come here to do a trail, follow this link: https://gpshash.com/trail
Rules: There are no rules, except that you have to navigate to your first waypoint.
Only then will the next waypoint be revealed.
No need to register: You don't need to register, just get the trail number from the organizer
and you are good to go.
Requirements: Mobile device with full battery.
Mobile data on.
GPS enabled.
Cookies allowed.
Allow Location Info to GPSHash.com
Start: Select 'Do a Trail' in main menu on this website, or simply type in 'gpshash.com/trail';
on your phone's browser.
You will be presented with a screen where you can choose your trail, as instructed by the organizer. After clicking submit, a page with trail details will appear.
Make sure this is the trail the organizer wants you to follow.
Enter a screen name: It is preferable that you use uses a recognizable name,
so that the organizer can check where people are.
After this, a screen appears (based on what the organizer thought was appropriate for this trail)
Leaving / quitting / resetting: If you close your browser and would come back a bit later to the same trail, GPSHash will remember you and knows which waypoints you cleared.
The same when you use the 'leave' button and choose 'quit'.
If you would use the 'Reset' option on the 'Leave' page, then your cleared waypoints
will be reset to none, and you have to start again to waypoint 1.
GPS Accuracy: Your mobile device has several settings for the built-in GPS.
Make sure that you enable 'high accuracy'.
On Android: Settings > System & devices > Location > On
Then click on 'Mode' and choose high accuracy
On IOS: On your iPhone or iPad, open the Settings app.
Tap Privacy > Location Services.
Make sure the switch next to “Location Services” is green.
Scroll down and select the browser you are using, e.g. Safari or Chrome.
Choose While Using the App.
Basically, this is a GPS-enabled version of a Hash Run.

Leith Treasure Trail
Date: You can do it any time you want.
Hares: Big Mac
Venue: The Anchor on The Shore, Leith
Location (W3W): https://w3w.co/holly.goes.calculating
Details: Here is a Treasure Hunt cum run stretching to some 7km. I initially I devised this last November
but held back publication as there were sufficient competing options at the time.
I then decided against releasing it in January as I had intended due to imposition of tough lockdown measures as I did not wish to encourage gatherings. I have now resurrected it for
those who might want to do something this weekend/next week before semi-normal hashing
resumes or at their leisure at any time. In addition to the various directions,
I have added What Three Words locators here and there in case anyone loses their way.
There are some 35 questions.
There are two files. The one labelled blank is obviously the one to be completed on trail,
and the one with answer in the title is as the name suggests and is password protected.
The password can be issued by Big Mac to those who complete it for self-scoring.
PLEASE CHECK SG Covid 19 guideline restrictions before doing this trail.
